Double role of microglyia in pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis

Abstract

The review provides modern data on immunocompromised, neurocytotoxic and neuroprotective functions of the central nervous system cells. The heterogeneity of these cells has been analyzed in detail, their physiological role in a healthy organism is shown: protection against infectious agents, control of the activity of neurons, phagocytosis of damaged brain cells, and aggregated proteins. Details of the neurotoxic and demyelinating effect of activated microglial cells themselves or in co‑operation with immune cells in degenerative and autoimmune diseases of the central nervous system such as scattered sclerosis are discussed in details. Some data are given on the anti‑inflammatory and remediating effects of microglycemia and its humoral factors that contribute to its neuroprotective function. It was concluded that microglia is inherited in addition to immunosuppressive, and also neuroprotective and neurotoxic functions, which are detected in autoimmune and degenerative periwence of the central nervous system.
