DOWNHILL SKIING IN THE PREVENTION OF LIFESTYLE DISEASES APPEARING AT OLD AGE

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2012, Vol 28, Issue 2

Abstract

The phenomenon of aging society has become common in developed countries and it constitutes, on the one hand, a great medicinal and civilization success but, on the other hand, a greater challenge as to the place and the role of the elderly in society. The average lifespan has risen in Poland during the last 15 years by 4.3 years and currently stands at 71 for men and 79 for women.According Central Statistical Office data of 2010, there are almost 7 million people over 60 in Poland. Unfortunately – as statistics in Poland show – the life of the elderly does not always remain healthy, autonomous, active and independent to the end. Therefore it is necessary to make use of every form of activity that enables the every elderly preserve their health and maintain optimal level of physical fitness; to guarantee acceptance and social integration and to provide with joie de vivre and self-realization. Such a form of activity could be, for example, downhill skiing, which – in spite of the fact that it is rightly seen as a difficult and often injury prone sport – in a properly adapted form should add variety to the elderly person’s activity. The goal of this work is to present downhill skiing as a form physical activity for older people based on selected literature.
