DSD as a tool enhancing comprehensive planning of prosthodontic treatment

Abstract
In recent years growing aesthetic demands concerning dental treatment have been observed among patients. In order to satisfy their sophisticated needs regarding prosthetic restorations, a variety of computer aided techniques has been developed, all of which aim to visualize the expected treatment result. This paper presents the potential of Digital Smile Design (DSD) to comprehensive planning of prosthodontic therapy. DSD enables presentation of virtual treatment plan, which includes the project of final restoration, based on the photographs of the patient. Digital tools utilized to design aesthetic prostheses facilitate communication between patient, dentist and dental technician, which results in patient’s satisfaction from final aesthetic appearance of the restoration. The paper presents the case of comprehensive prosthodontic treatment with application of DSD tool. The therapy included deprogramation of occlusal conditions utilizing Kois anterior deprogramator, registration of achieved centric relation, followed by visualization of planned reconstruction. Wax-up was prepared according to the DSD project. Correction of soft tissues improved the shape of free gingival margin in the anterior sextant. Full zirconium prosthodontic crowns veneered with Prettau ceramic (ZirkonZahn, Italy) constituted final prosthodontic restoration. Satisfying aesthetic result was achieved.
