DYNAMICS OF CHANGES IN PHYSICAL FITNESS IN TENNIS PLAYERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. Tennis is a very popular sport, and it is practised by child competitors at ever younger ages. The aim of this study was to demonstrate, in a longitudinal evaluation, the dynamics of changes in physical fitness in tennis players and to compare these changes with those found in non-players of the same age. Material and methods. Six tennis players from tennis clubs in the city of Poznan were examined three times in years 2000-2005. The age at the time of first examination ranged from 9 to 14 years (mean 12.3 years). The results of the players were compared with those obtained in a group of schoolboys of the same age and presented by Drabik (1997). The dynamics of changes in physical fitness was evaluated by means of The European Test of Physical Fitness “Eurofit”. Results. None of the examined players showed progress in every test in subsequent examinations. The highest progress was observed in the strength of shoulders and speed of movements of the hands whereas progress was least visible in the running speed and strength of the abdominal muscles. There was no direct correlation between the results of the tests and position of the players in the ranking list of the Polish Tennis Association. The results obtained by the tennis players were significantly better than those described for non-players.Conclusions. Dynamics of changes in physical fitness in tennis players was higher than that observed in non-players of the same age. Lack of direct correlation between results of physical fitness tests and ranking place of the players may indicate that there are other factors that influence competition results.
