Early results of inguinal hernia repair with Desarda method in 17 patients. A preliminary report
Journal Title: Wideochirurgia i Inne Techniki Małoinwazyjne - Year 2006, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
A preferable method of inguinal hernia repair nowadays is the use of mesh graft in tension-free techniques. In the past few years a new technique developed by a surgeon from India, Mohan P. Desarda, was introduced. This method is based on the use of a strip of the external oblique aponeurosis which strengthens the posterior wall of the inguinal canal. Aim: To evaluate the initial results of Desarda’s inguinal hernia repair six months after the surgery. Material and methods: A group of 17 patients was analysed. 15 male and 2 female patients aged between 19 and 68 (average 45) were surveyed with sent questionnaires. We analysed the duration of the surgery and hospitalisation, the occurrence of complications during and after the surgery, patients” subjective evaluation of the surgery regarding pain and time of returning to normal physical activity, as well as hernia recurrence. Results: Out of 17 questionnaires sent we obtained 16 responses. Two patients (12.5%) had minor local complications in the early postoperative period. 14 patients had no pain complaints six months after the surgery, while the remaining two patients described their complaints as minor. The effect of performed surgery was described as good or very good in 15 cases. There was no hernia recurrence among the patients. Conclusions: Based on the results of our study, we conclude that Desarda’s inguinal hernia repair technique is a simple and effective method of surgical correction of this pathology. However, in order to reach full-perspective conclusions, it is necessary to analyze a larger group of patients observed in a much longer period of time.
