ECCLESIASTICAL LEGAL ASPECTS OF THE CATHOLIC CHAPLAINCY OF FORESTERS AND HUNTERS IN POLAND
Journal Title: Studia z Prawa Wyznaniowego - Year 2009, Vol 12, Issue 12
Abstract
Catholic and non-Catholic chaplaincy of foresters and hunters in Poland has a long tradition and dates back to medieval times. The chaplaincy of foresters and hunters used to be the domain of Catholic pastors, their curates or monastic priests. The evolution of specialized pastoral assistance occurred at the turn of the 20th century and was incentivized by the provisions of the Second Vatican Council of 1965 and the political and economic transformation in Poland in 1989. Contemporary chaplaincy of foresters and hunters does not develop separate organizational units under ecclesiastical law or Polish law, such as the Military Ordinariate of Polish Army, or deaneries in the police of customs service. However, the Polish Episcopate Conference permitted every diocesan bishop to establish special, permanent chaplains to watch over hunters and foresters. Notwithstanding the fact that the role of pastoral service among hunters and foresters has been highly appreciated by Church authorities and the faithful, its development gained momentum no earlier than at the beginning of this century. Currently, such service is performed voluntarily. It the foreseeable future, (de lege ferenda postulates) the Polish Episcopate Conference and competent Polish authorities might enter relevant agreements to adjust this matter. This would allow the modification of Polish law towards the institutionalization and public co-financing of chaplaincy in such communities. Such solutions would be socially desired and complying with the constitutional principle of cooperation [of the State and churches] for the individual and common good (Article 25(3) of the 1997 Constitution of the Republic of Poland).
