EFFECT OF AGING ON TIMED BALANCE TEST SCORES

Abstract
Background -Tests of sta ndin g bala nce ar e f re que ntly includ ed in neu rological evalua tions, fe w ob jec tive d at a ar e available to in dicat e ho w well individuals of different ages should be able to maintain s ta ndin g bal anc e so th e pr ese nt stu dy was ca rrie d ou t to est abl ish th e r el atio nship bet we en pe rfo rma nce on time d b alanc e tes ts a nd a ge.Method ology: Normal males an d femal es (n=7 5) in the a ge g rou p of 20-69 yea rs wer e included in t he stu dy aft er t hey gav e th eir inform ed cons en t. The subj ects wer e allocat ed to 5 gro ups accor din g to th eir a ge. G roup A – 20-29 years, Grou p B – 30-3 9 ye ars, G rou p C – 40-49 ye ar, Grou p D – 50-5 9 ye ars, G rou p E – 60-69 y ears. Su bj ects stoo d wit hou t shoes wi th w eig ht b ea rin g l ower extremities inside 18×20- inch es wooden fr ame on a smooth a nd level surfac e. Sub jec ts in each ag e g roup p erf orm ed eig ht b alancin g activities an d time was reco rd ed for e ach ac tivity on a digital stop wa tch.Results- All subjects balanced for 30 seconds with fe et ap ar t and wit h fe et to ge th er bot h with th eir ey es open a nd wi th th eir eyes closed. A significan t ne ga tive corr elation e xiste d be twe en t he a ge and tim ed bal ance o n one leg wit h eyes open a nd eyes closed.C onclus ion – Th e results of th e p rese nt stu dy showed tha t tim ed b al anc e t est scor esdec re asedwith ageing.
