Effect of Contamination on Long Term Durability of Rihand Dam, Uttar Pradesh, India - A Case Study
Journal Title: International Journal of Research in Chemistry and Environment (IJRCE) - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 4
Abstract
The performance of hydro power projects gets affected predominantly due to chemical nature of water. If the hydro-environment happens to be aggressive it will affect the durability of concrete structure. For the purpose of assessment of the impact of pollution on the health of Rihand Dam (24°12′9″N 83°0′29″E 24.2025°N 83.00806°E) located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, an investigation programme was initiated by Central Soil and Materials Research Station, New Delhi in year 1998. Availability of coal mines in the vicinity of the reservoir resulted into raising of five super thermal power plants of 2,000 MW, 2,260 MW, 3,130 MW, 3,000 MW, and 210 MW capacity. Abundance of electricity encouraged the establishment of various chemical industries around the reservoir. All these plants, coal mines and chemical industries use Rihand reservoir water for cooling and even the discharge of industrial effluents. Addition of effluents from chemical industry or thermal power plants contaminates the reservoir water. This aggressive water poses multifold problems like chloride attack, carbonation of concrete, acid attack, sulphate attac etc. Quality control, maintenance and planning for the restoration of these structures need urgent assessment and multidisciplinary approach to check its menace. The present case study presents the assessment of degree of contamination, the degree of aggressivity of water and its influence on the concrete, observed during the period 2007 to 2009.
