Effect of cypermethrin on memory, movement activity and co-ordination in mice after transient incomplete cerebral ischemia.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2008, Vol 60, Issue 5
Abstract
Cypermethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid widely used as an insecticide. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible effect of 0.1 LD(50) of cypermethrin on memory, movement activity and co-ordination in mice exposed to transient incomplete cerebral ischemia. Transient occlusion of both carotid arteries (BCCA) in adult female mice was performed under ketamine + xylazine anesthesia. Intraperitoneal LD(50) for cypermethrin was calculated to be 169.9 mg/kg. Memory retention was evaluated in a step-through passive avoidance task (PA), working spatial memory in a Y-maze, spontaneous movement activity in an automated device fitted with two photocells and a counter in two subsequent 30-min periods, and movement co-ordination on a rod spinning at the rate of 10 rotations/min. Neither memory nor movement co-ordination were significantly affected by transient incomplete cerebral ischemia or cypermethrin. BCCA itself did not impair movement activity in the examined mice. Cypermethrin decreased exploratory motor activity in the mice, and the effect was exacerbated by BCCA. These results show that transient incomplete cerebral ischemia combined with exposure to subtoxic doses of cypermethrin do not impair memory, but do affect behavior, producing transient reduction of spontaneous horizontal movement in mice.

Increased synphilin-1 expression in human elderly brains with substantia nigra Marinesco bodies.
The aim of the present study was to examine the expression of synphilin-1, alpha-synuclein, and tyrosine hydroxylase in human elderly brains and the incidence of Marinesco bodies (MBs, intranuclear inclusions) in the neu...
Effects of chronic flunitrazepam treatment schedule on therapy-induced sedation and motor impairment in mice.
Background: The aim of the present study was to examine whether different treatment schedules could be associated with tolerance development to the ataxic and sedative effects of flunitrazepam in mice. Methods: Effects o...
Prostacyclin, but not nitric oxide, is the major mediator of acetylcholine-induced vasodilatation in the isolated mouse heart.
In many species, acetylcholine (Ach) induces coronary vasodilatation via endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO). The aim of the present study was to examine if this rule pertains also to the coronary circulation of the mo...
Morphine-induced place preference affects mRNA expression of G protein α subunits in rat brain.
Background: The conditioned place preference (CPP) test is an animal model serving to assess addictive potential of drugs in which environmental cues become associated with the subjective effects of drugs of abuse. Morph...
