Effect of Different Nutritional Levels on the Performance and Energy-Related Blood Metabolites of Hanwoo Beef Heifers during Summer and Winter
Journal Title: Journal of Animal Production Advances - Year 2015, Vol 5, Issue 10
Abstract
The effect of different levels of nutrition during summer and winter on the performance and blood metabolites of Hanwoo beef heifers was evaluated. Thirty-two Hanwoo beef heifers (150-250kg) were divided into 4 different levels of feeding to achieve a projected daily gain (0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8kg) during summer and winter season. Performance parameters showed that during summer, even during times of thermal stress, growing heifers were able to utilize feed efficiently and gain up to 600 grams per day. The same pattern was observed during winter with heifers projected to gain 0.6kg/day had significantly better feed efficiency. In energy related metabolites, thermal environment affected some blood metabolites depending on the season. Summer greatly affected total cholesterol and insulin, while during winter the blood metabolite greatly affected was glucose, cholesterol, liver enzymes and cortisol. Our results showed that changing the nutritional levels offered to the animals during period of thermal stress can help the animal adapt, cope and perform better. These results provided us insights about the physiological responses of Hanwoo beef heifers during summer and winter and can be used to further studies.
