EFFECT OF FUNCTIONAL SEEDS MIXTURE ON GLUCOSE AND LIPID PROFILE

Journal Title: WORLD JOURNAL PHARMACY AND PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE - Year 2019, Vol 8, Issue 10

Abstract

Introduction: Elevation of blood glucose, cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein have adverse effects on blood vessels, heart, and health. There is evidence to use natural functional food instead of medicine to control such health problems. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of formulated seeds mixture on blood glucose and lipid profile of patients visiting the clinic of nutrition in Excellence Center of National Research Center. Materials and Methods: Functional seeds mixture was prepared from good quality of flax, sesame garbanzo seeds and palm pollen grains, ground and mixed together in certain ratio. Ethanolic extracts was prepared for studying the antioxidant capacity, total phenols and total isoflavons of the seed mixture. Fractionation of phenolic acids was performed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Also the fractions of volatile fatty acids were defined using gas chromatography (GC). Antioxidant power of the seeds extract was estimated using DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays. Thirty obese, diabetic patients gave their consent to be enrolled in the study and their blood samples were collected before and after treatment. Blood sugar, Malondialdhyde (MDA) as oxidative marker, plasma level of cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, liver and kidney function parameters (urea, creatinine, AST and ALT) were estimated Participants were given 20 g twice daily of the seed mixture for two months. Data were computed and statistically analyzed. Results: Chemical analysis of the seed mixture showed high concentration of total phenols and flavonoids as well as high antioxidant power. Phenolic acids profile showed high concentration of Chrysin. Also, Rutin, Kaempferol Qurecetin, Rosmarinic and Cinnamic acids were demonstrated. GC fractionation of fatty acids showed high concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Serum analysis of patients revealed significant (P ≤ 0.001) reduction of blood sugar, cholesterol, LDL, Triglycerides and MDA (P ≤ 0.05). Kidney and liver function showed no changes indicating the safety of the seed mixture. Conclusion: Current seed formula has rich content of antioxidants, poly unsaturated fatty acids, poly phenols and isoflavons which lowered the level of oxidative stress marker, blood sugar and lipid profile in patients. The seed mixture is recommended as a functional food additive.
