Effect of monensin, a Na(+)-specific carboxylic ionophore on the oxidative defense system in rat testis.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2007, Vol 59, Issue 4
Abstract
The effect of monensin, a Na(+)-specific ionophore on the oxidative defense system in rat testis was studied. Monensin mixed in the animal diet was administered at the dose levels of 2.5, 5 and 10 mg/kg b.w. to Wistar rats for a period of 67 days. Amarked inhibition in the activities of different oxidative defense enzymes such as catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione-S-transferase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione reductase was noticed, which indicates the possible involvement of free radicals in the antispermatogenic effects of monensin in rat testis. This was further substantiated by a significant increase in the generation of lipid peroxides along with the depletion of reduced glutathione. The drug treatment resulted in a significant change in apoptotic cell death as seen by an elevated fragmentation in the testicular genomic DNA. Monensin treatment also resulted in marked degenerative changes in the histoarchitecture of testis, such as depletion of different germ cell populations, vacuole formation and disorganization of seminiferous tubules. The results are indicative of the potential antispermatogenic effects of monensin in the rat.

Some drugs inhibit in vitro hydratase and esterase activities of human carbonic anhydrase-I and II.
In this study, we determined the in vitro inhibitory effects of ceftriaxone sodium, imipenem and ornidazole on hydratase and esterase activities of human erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase-I and II isozymes (CA I and II). Hu...
Effect of total and partial nephrectomy on the elimination of ciprofloxacin in humans.
Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common form of kidney cancer. Surgery is a standard procedure to resect the tumor during total (TN) or partial (nephron-sparing) nephrectomy (PN). Ciprofloxacin is most...
Rabbit erythrocytes possess adenylyl cyclase type II that is activated by the heterotrimeric G proteins Gs and Gi.
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) release from rabbit erythrocytes occurs inresponse to deformation or reduced oxygen tension. A signal transduction pathway that relates these stimuli to ATP release has been proposed. This pa...
Effects of propranolol on the development of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in male rats.
Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis is the most frequently occurring type of secondary osteoporosis. Antagonists of β-adrenergic receptors are now considered to be potential drugs under investigation for osteoporosis. Th...
Simvastatin inhibits the increase in serum tau protein levels in the acute phase of ischemic stroke.
Our goal was to analyze the effects of treatment with a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor (simvastatin, 40 mg/day) on serum S100BB and tau protein levels during the acute ischemic stroke...
