Effect of Optimism, Pessimism and Anxiety on Life Orientation Test-Revised Scale among University Students

Abstract

ABSTRACT:Optimism is an attitude of a healthy mind that leads to success while pessimism is ingrained habit of mind with the consequences of underachievement and anxiety. University students who practice optimism are considered highly significant with the score of Life Orientation Test-Revised.OBJECTIVE:Toexploretherelationshipof OptimismPessimismandanxietywithLife OrientationTest-RevisedamongUniversity Students. METHOD:Acorrelation study was conducted to find out the relationshipbetweenOptimism,Pessimismand anxietywithLifeOrientationTest–Revisedin University Students. Random sampling technique was used. Sample of 192 students (88 males and 104 female) between the age ranges of 20-25 years was drawn from various departments of University of ManagementandTechnology(UMT)and GovernmentCollegeUniversityLahore(GCU) statistically analyzed using SPSS version 21.0.RESULTS:Results shows that positive relationship between the competitive trait anxiety and optimism level was found to be statistically significant (p=.05). This confirmsthehypothesisthatasanxietylevels increased, optimism levels decreased and vice versa.CONCLUSION: It was concluded that optimism and pessimism makes significant influence on the life orientation among the university students. This confirms the hypothesis that asanxietylevelsincreased,optimismlevels decreased. Notably, it was also found that age had a statisticallysignificantpositivecorrelationto optimism levels as well.
