Effect of organic additives on porous silicon nitride ceramics prepared by extrusion method

Abstract
Porous silicon nitride ceramics with excellent properties were prepared by adding different organic additives into the initial silicon nitride powder by extrusion method. Effect of organic additives on microstructure and mechanical properties of green bodies and sintered porous silicon nitride ceramics were studied. The parameters of extrusion process were also optimized. The results show that green bodies and sintered porous silicon nitride ceramics with excellent properties could be obtained when the solid content ranged from 70% to 75%, the extrusion force ranged from 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa, using castor oil as lubricant, 10% concentration PEG with relative molecular mass of 1 000 as plasticizer, 4% concentration MC and HPMC as binder. Compared with MC, HPMC was more suitable for industrial production because of its better water retention.
