Effect of organic contaminants on seed germination of
Lolium multiflorum in soil
Journal Title: Biology and Medicine - Year 2009, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
The seed germination trials have relevance in selection of the plants for their prospective use in phytoremediation. The effect of organic contaminants; anthracene and chlorpyrifos on the seed germination of Lolium multiflorum (ryegrass) has been investigated. The germination of ryegrass seeds was evaluated in the separately spiked soil with organic compounds at the concentrations 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg/kg while un-spiked soil taken as control. There was no inhibitory effect of anthracene observed on germination as compared to the control whereas significant reduction and delay in seed germination was observed at the higher chlorpyrifos concentrations of 75 and 100 mg/kg. The results show the pesticide (chlorpyrifos) toxicity was not caused to the ryegrass seeds up to the concentration of 50 mg/kg. The level of seed germination was found to decrease with increasing concentrations of chlorpyrifos in the soil. The findings of this study assessed ability of ryegrass seeds to survive and tolerate the contaminants for phytoremediation studies.
Response of Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) to fly ash and brick
kiln dust amended soil
In the present study, the effect of different fly ash and brick kiln dust levels in soil (0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%) were observed on growth performances and yield of eggplant. For the experiment, one kg of ea...
Chlorpyrifos pesticide toxicity on erythrocyte sedimentation rate in
fish, Channa punctatus (Bloch.)
Almost all the pesticides and more particularly the synthetic pesticides used, find there way into water bodies alter the metabolism of aquatic organisms is known long back. In the present investigation, the effect of s...
Assessment of severity of anemia and its effect on the quality of life
(QOL) of patients suffering with various types of neoplasia
Anemia is one of the most important key factors affecting the quality of life (QOL) which needs addressing, as it is an important domain in optimal QOL. About 60-75% of the cancer patients invariably developed anemia mo...
Protective effect of Ocimum sanctum on lipid peroxidation,
nucleic acids and protein against restraint stress in male albino
rats
Effect of restraint stress on brain oxidative stress parameters and their modulation by Ocimum sanctum Linn (OS) were evaluated in male albino rats. Rats were subjected to restraint / immobilization stress 3h/day for 6...
Methyl methanesulphonate induced chromosomal variations in a
medicinal plant Cichorium intybus L. during microsporogenesis
Genotoxic effect of MMS on gametic cells of chicory has been investigated in the present study. Progenies were raised from seeds treated with four different concentrations that is 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10 % aqueous soluti...
