Effect of Panax ginseng on glucose level and lipid profile of normal and diabetic male rats (Rattus norvegicus)

Journal Title: World Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 3

Abstract

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of the Panax ginseng on glucose level and lipid profile of normal and diabetic male rats. Thirty six mature male rats were used, these animals were divided into six groups, each group contain six animals as the following: group 1 (control group) was treated orally with (1 mL/animal) of distilled water for 30 days, group 2 (diabetic group) injected (I.P.) with single dose of (125mg/kg) of alloxan , group 3 was treated orally with (300mg/kg) of ginseng daily for 30 days, group 4 was treated orally with (600mg/kg) of ginseng for 30 days, group 5 injected (I.P.) with single dose of (125mg/kg) of alloxan and after one week treated orally with (300mg/kg) of ginseng and the group 6 injected (I.P.) with a single dose of (125mg/kg) of alloxan and after one week treated with (600mg/kg) of ginseng The result indicated a significant increase (P≤ 0.05) in the level of the serum glucose, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride( TG), LDL, VLDL and atherogenic index in group B compared with all groups. In addition, there was a significant decrease (P< 0.01) in HDL in-group B comparison with other groups. The treatment with ginseng caused a significant decrease (P< 0.05) in the level of the serum glucose, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride TG, LDL, VLDL and atherogenic index in groups(E and F)comparison with group B while there was non-significant difference in groups (C and D.Also, there was a significant increase in HDL level in groups(E and F) comparison with group B.
