EFFECT OF SELECTED FILLERS ON THE COEFFICIENT OF STATIC FRICTION OF PTFE BASED COMPOSITES ON STEEL

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2010, Vol 234, Issue 6

Abstract

Determination of frictional resistance, apart from durability, is a significant issue during the designing of sliding machine elements, especially these that work in reciprocating motion. Friction losses in these elements may cause a significant decrease of the whole system efficiency during the start-up period. Tribological investigations of selected sliding couples (PTFE composite on metal) in the static friction were carried out on the rig. The material of selected polymeric composites for tribological investigations was based on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The fillers were made of bronze powder, graphite, and glass fibre. These composites co-operated with steel C45 in dry friction conditions. Test results demonstrated the significant influence of fillers on the value of the static friction coefficient. The highest value of the coefficient of friction was observed for composites containing bronze powder and the lowest value for the composites containing graphite. Increasing the filler content in the composite leads to an increase in the value of the coefficient of static friction. Adhesion of fillers (bronze powder, graphite) to steel and their mechanical effects (glass fibre) play an important role in the resistance of static friction.
