Effect of the planting material on the incidence of dry rot in Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott and Xanthosoma spp.
Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2012, Vol 12, Issue 4
Abstract
The cocoyam (Xanthosoma spp. and Colocasia esculenta) is a monocot plant with vegetative propagation. This work was developed with the aim of determining the effect of the planting material type on the incidence of dry rot in two cultivars of Colocasia and Xanthosoma genera. Primary and secondary rhizomes, crowns of primary rhizomes and in vitro plants were used. The plantation was maintained for twelve months and the plants were characterized morphologically in the growing stage. Besides, it was determined the incidence of dry rot per treatment at growing and harvest stage. Finally, the yield was determined. When in vitro plants were used the percentage of incidence and intensity of the damage of dry rot was less in both cultivars. The yield in primary rhizomes and overall was significantly higher. The results indicated the superiority of in vitro plants as initial plantation material over the traditional seed used in taro culture. Furthermore, it allows the designing a seed production program by biotechnological methods.

Protocol for selecting orange rust resistant sugarcane cultivars by artificial inoculation in greenhouse
Orange rust [Puccinia kuehnii (W. Kruger) E. J. Butler] from sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) is a disease of potential importance for Cuban sugarcane farming. However, under natural conditions, the presence of symptoms has n...
Effect of the height of Coffea arabica cv. Caturra rojo J-884 plants obtained by somatic embryogenesis in the ex vitro adaptation
The asexual propagation through somatic embryogenesis has been developed in different coffee cultivars (Coffea arabica L. and Coffea canephora Pierre ex Froehner). This investigation was carried out with the objective...
Use of Temporary Immersion Systems as an alternative for the in vitro propagation of the plantain cultivar ‘INIVITPV06-30’ (Musa AAB)
Temporary Im mersion Systems (TIS) had been used for in v it r o multiplication of different cultivars of Musa spp. achieving high coefficients of multiplication. This investigation was carried out to focussed on the mu...
In vitro conservation of sugar cane plants
The development of in vitro culture techniques for plant tissues provides new alternatives for ex situ conservation of sugarcane germplasm. The aim of this paper was to determine the conditions for in vitro conservatio...
Physiological parameters in Solanum lycopersicum L. seedlings, obtained from X-rays irradiated seeds
A study was carried out to determine the effect of low doses of X-rays on some physiological indicators of tomato seedlings FA-180, in greenhouse cultivation during the months of July-August 2010. The treatment was car...
