Effect of zinc coated during storage on the seed quality of barley

Journal Title: International Journal of Farming and Allied Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 8

Abstract

In evaluating seed quality, water content, hectoliter weight test and germination are important factors, as well as growth and development of seedlings and seed viability The objective was to evaluate the effect of seed barley coated with zinc, in its physiological and enzyme quality, during storage. We used two batches of seed, high and low quality. For seed treatment, we used commercial product, with a source of zinc in the form of ZnSO4, along with fungicide and polymer. It was tested for levels 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 mL ZnSO4 kg-1 seed. The physiological quality, during the storage period, was analyzed by the tests: moisture, hectoliter weight, germination, emergence, index emergence rate and tetrazolium test. Barley seed coating with zinc sulfate at doses 3-4 mL kg-1 seed, are effective in maximizing the physiological quality of seeds, up to six months of storage. Seed coating of barley with at doses 3-4 mL kg-1 seed, cause a smaller decrease in seeds viability on seeds during storage.
