Effectiveness of Educational Intervention on Knowledge and Attitude About Rabies and its Preventive Measures Among Nursing Students of a Tertiary Care Hospital in Puducherry.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Rabies is a major public health problem in India. Nursing personnel needed to be well equipped in the management of patients with animal bite. The present study was aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude about rabies and its preventive measures among nursing students and to assess the effectiveness of the educational intervention measures on the same. Materials and methods: A pre and post test intervention study was conducted among first year nursing students in Indirani College of Nursing. A pre designed and pre tested semi structured questionnaire was self administered to 145 students with an universal sampling design and the study was conducted from June to July,2015. Following the initial assessment an educational intervention through a lecture for a duration of 1 hour was conducted. Post intervention assessment was conducted one month after the educational intervention session. Statistical analysisMcnemar’schisquare test, paired t test was done and data analyzed by SPSS version 17.Results: The educational intervention showed a statistically significant improvement in both the knowledge domain (p<0.0001) and attitude score (p=0.0001). Awareness about prevention of rabies by vaccine and immunoglobulins after educational intervention, increased by 22.7% and 84.2% (p<0.0001) respectively. The mean attitude score before and after intervention were 1.45 (1.04) and 8.9(3.04) respectively. Conclusion: The study suggests that there is a need to create awareness about the importance of rabies among the nursing students. The educational intervention made a substantial improvement in knowledge and attitude about the disease amongst the study subjects.
