Effectiveness of one-visit and two-visit treatment of  teeth with infected root canals

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2013, Vol 66, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction. For a long time, discussion has been going on among scientists regarding the effectiveness of one- and two-visit treatment of infected root canals. There is still no consensus as to which clinical procedure is more effective. The search for novel methods of treatment has resulted in the development of ozone-generating devices to eliminate microorganisms from the root canal system. Currently one-visit treatment is more often considered to be a good alternative to two-visit treatment. Aim of the study. To evaluate clinically one- and two-visit treatment of teeth with infected root canals. Material and methods. A total of 256 teeth in 214 patients were included in the study. The final group consisted of 223 teeth of 181 patients aged of 13-69 years. A particular method of clinical procedure was randomly selected. The following criteria were considered: gender and age of patients, PAI index value before treatment (PAI 0) and 6 (PAI 6) and 12 months (PAI 12) after treatment. Results. After a 12-month follow-up the positive result of endodontic treatment, PAI 1-2, was achieved in one-visit with the use of ozone (fraction: 0.98) and in one-visit without using ozone in all patients of this group (fraction 1.00) as well as in two-visit treatment with calcium hydroxide (fraction: 0.94). Conclusion. The outcomes of the check-up performed after 6 and 12 months demonstrated a significant decrease in periapical lesions or even their complete healing. The described methods of clinical procedures revealed the similar clinical efficiency.
