Effects of biochar-based fertilizer addition on maize yield and greenhouse gas emission characteristics

Journal Title: Journal of Henan Agricultural University - Year 2022, Vol 56, Issue 5

Abstract

[Objective] This thesis investigates the effect of fertilizer reduction with biochar-based fertilizer on maize yield and soil greenhouse gas emission characteristics through maize field experiments. [Methods] A total of six treatments were set in the experiment, namely, no chemical fertilizer (CK), single chemical fertilizer (UF), single biochar-based fertilizer (BCF), and biochar-based fertilizer combined with different proportions of chemical fertilizer (three proportions, namely 60%, 80% and 100%, denoted as BCF60, BCF80 and BCF100, respectively). [Results] The cumulative emission of CH4-C during maize growth period was BCF100=BCF80=BCF > UF=CK > BCF60. Among them, BCF, BCF80 and BCF100 emissions were the highest and the same, which increased by 5% compared with UF. The cumulative emission of N2 O-N in BCF60 treatment was the highest, which increased by 4% compared with UF. While, the emission reduction effect of BCF and BCF80 treatments was obvious, which respectively decreased by 17% and 15% compared with UF. The cumulative CO2-C emissions of BCF60 treatment was the highest and increased by 1% compared with UF, while the cumulative emissions in BCF, BCF80 and BCF100 treatments decreased by 9%, 7% and 2% compared with UF. The maize yield of BCF treatment decreased by 3% compared with UF, however, biochar-based fertilizer combined with chemical fertilizer increased maize yield. Compared with UF, the maize yield of BCF60, BCF80 and BCF100 increased by 15%, 21% and 9%, respectively. The comprehensive warming potential of greenhouse gases was BCF60 > UF > BCF100 > BCF80 > CK > BCF, while the emission intensity of greenhouse gases was CK>UF>BCF>BCF100>BCF60>BCF80. The results indicated that compared with UF, the comprehensive warming potential of greenhouse gases in BCF60 increased by 1.5% in maize season, while the comprehensive warming potential and emission intensity of greenhouse gases in BCF80 respectively decreased by 25% and 38% in maize season, showing that the alleviated ability of global warming potential to a certain extent with the reduction of chemical fertilizer by 20% combined with biochar-based fertilizer. [Conclusion] Fertilizer reduction of 20% with biochar-based fertilizer can reduce cumulative greenhouse gas emissions, comprehensive warming potential and greenhouse gas emission intensity, and increase maize yield in a short period of time.
