EFFECTS OF DIFFERENTINSTRUMENTATION TECHNIQUES ON ANTERIOR COLUMN AXIAL LOADING IN BOVINE SPINE MODEL: A BIOMECHANICAL STUDY

Journal Title: Journal of Turkish Spinal Surgery - Year 2008, Vol 19, Issue 2

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study is investigate the axial loading on vertebral body with different instrumentation techniques in bovine spine model which has a standardized biomechanical instability. Materials and Method: Anterior total corpectomy was performed to six bovine spine for standart instability model. A load cell placed at the defect site. Four different instrumentation techniques such as; (1) anterior corpus plate, (2) anterior double rod, (3) posterior short segment transpedicular screw, (4) combined anterior double rod and posterior short segment transpedicular screws were performed. Each specimen was axially loaded and the measurements of load cell at 200, 400, 600 and 800 Newton axial loads were recorded. Mann Whitney U test was used for statistical analysis. Results: Anterior load cell measurements of combined anterior plate and posterior short segment transpedicular screw applications are significantly lower than the other instrumentation techniques (p<0.05). Conclusion: Combined anterior and posterior fixation can resist more axial loads than the other instrumentation techniques in a bovine spine model.
