Effects of Vitex doniana leaf extract on aluminium-induced toxicity in male albino Wistar rats
Journal Title: Journal of Applied Biology & Biotechnology - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 5
Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the effect of ethanolic leaf extract of Vitex doniana on the toxicity induced by aluminium chloride in male Wistar albino rats. A total of 15 male albino rats were used for the study and toxicity was induced using 100mg/kg body weight (bw) AlCl3. They were grouped into three (five rats in each group): normal control, AlCl3 control and AlCl3 + 100mg Vitex doniana respectively. The normal control group was fed with standard rat chow only, while the AlCl3 control group was orally administered 100mg/kgbw AlCl3, and the AlCl3 + V.D group was orally administered 100mg/kgbw extract following administration of AlCl3. The study was conducted for 7 days after which the effect of the extract was assessed following the animal sacrifice. Oral dose of 100mg/kg bw extract of Vitex doniana did not show any significant change in TBARS level of liver and testes in the experimental groups, while the AST, ALT and ALP levels in AlCl3 control and AlCl3 + 100mg Vitex doniana showed significant increase (p<0.05) and non-significant increase (except ALT which increased significantly) with control group respectively. The PCV and Hb levels did not show any significant (p>0.05) change from the control group, while there was no significant difference in bilirubin level among the different experimental groups. More research should therefore be done on this study to further understand the usefulness of ethanolic leaf extract of Vitex doniana, and encourage its application in herbal medicine.
Production, characterization and optimization of fermented tomato and carrot juices by using Lysinibacillus sphaericus isolate
Fermentation of tomato and carrot juices was carried out with a native isolate of Lysinibacillus sphaericus. Initial screening showed that total phenolics, antioxidants and titratable acidity were higher in both the ferm...
Effect of Artificially Induced Drought Stress on Seedlings of Pinus roxburghii Sarg
Water relation and growth parameters of drought stressed seedlings of Chir pine (Pinus roxburghii Sarg.) were studied over a one year period. The seedlings were subjected to three drought cycles of 9, 18, 27 days and one...
Phytochemical and Chromatographic Evaluation of Kaempferol from Flemingia tuberosa Dalzell: An Endemic Plant of Western Ghats
Objectives: The aim of this study was preliminary phytochemical screening and quantitative analysis of marker compound by a modern technique like HPTLC for Flemingia tuberosa. Kaempferol has been quantitated from differe...
Isolation of phosphate solubilizing fungi from rhizosphere soil and its effect on seed growth parameters of different crop plants
A total of twenty two rhizospheric fungi were isolated from different rhizosphere soil of healthy crop plants of Mysore, Karnataka, India and tested for their efficacy to solubilize phosphates in PKV medium. Among the is...
