EFL Teachers’ Technology Use and Attitudes Towards Information and Communication Technologies in Education

Abstract

Information technologies offer various opportunities in foreign language learning and teaching. In this descriptive study, to what extent English language instructors currently use technology and educational technologies is investigated. The sample consists of 87 English language instructors (71 female and 16 male) who work in Ege University School of Foreign Languages. Findings reveal that English language instructors in the study generally have positive attitudes towards information and communication technologies in education; their attitudes significantly vary according to their computer skill levels, and information and communication technologies use in their lessons, however their attitudes does not significantly change in accordance with their professional experiences. Besides, they use personnel computers and the internet but still find it necessary to be encouraged to use more technology in preparing and delivering lessons. They also need to be introduced with up-to-date instructional technology tools. In this respect, regarding the institution it is suggested that an infrastructure which meets the learning-teaching needs is primarily required. Besides, professional development programs related to digital tools enhancing learning and teaching English can be designed.
