Abstract
A historical research was carried out with a qualitative approach. The study population was constituted by the documents of interest filed in Archivo de Indias, as well as those of the sources from press that revolved around the figure of Eugenio Espejo. The purpose of the study was to establish the historical fidelity of the iconography of that forerunner of Ecuadorian nationality.
