Electrophysiological study of neuropathy in relation to the duration of Diabetes Mellitus
Journal Title: MedPulse -International Medical Journal - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 7
Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from a defect in insulin secretion, insulin action or bothand diabetic neuropathies are the most common type of neuropathies worldwide. The electrophysiological examination provides objective information about the physiologic state of the nerve, nerve root, neuromuscular junction and muscle. As neuropathy is the earliest microvascular complication in diabetes, and upto 50% patients may be asymptomatic who are at risk of developing foot ulcer, hence if detection is done earlier, changes can be reverted or progression can be halted.
