Journal Title: Психологічні перспективи - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 29
Abstract
The article deals with the psychological phenomenon of acquired (memorized, grafted) helplessness, which as a result of generalization to other areas is shown on a personal level as an integral personal property. The consequences of personal helplessness and passivity are reducing of energy potential on three levels: activity (behavior), emotions and motivation. It was theoretically grounded the necessity of separation of empirical referents of helplessness – real signs that record the presence or absence of the studied property of the subject. It was defined the diagnostic criteria of personal of helplessness: locus of control and attributive style (cognitive and (rational) component of helplessness), prevailing emotional states (affective component of helplessness), peculiarities of achievement motivation (motivational component of helplessness). It was described the empirical research scheme: the selection of psychodiagnostic tools, sampling formation, grounding of empirical characterisitcs (referents) and analysis methods and generalization of the obtained results. The methods of mathematical statistics (cluster, factor analys) for authentication of empirical characteristics of personal helplessness have been applied. The results of empirical research have been generalized on the basis of which the cognitive, emotional and action-motivational peculiarities of manifestation of helplessness among the modern students were specified and the selection into groups depending on specificity of combination and manifestation of specified components and determinants of helplessness were differentiated. It was proved that empirical referents of formed personal helplessness of the examined can be considered: low level of subjective control (externality), pessimistic attributive style, predominance of negative emotional states (fatigue, increased anxiety, depression), low level of aspiration (prevalence of motive of failures avoiding, unexpressed motives of cognitive activity and competitive motives, lack of confidence in the positive results, etc.). Additional empirical referents of personal helplessnesshave been determined: emotional dissonance, self-destructive, reactive aggression, low self-worth, self-concept rigidity, inertia processes and mechanisms of self-development.Key words: personal helplessness, empirical referents, diagnostic criteria, locus of control, attributive style, self-estimation, achievement motivation.
