Endogenous neuroprotective factors: neurosteroids.

Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2006, Vol 58, Issue 3

Abstract

Neurosteroids are a group of steroid hormones synthesized by the brain in the presence of steroidogenic enzymes. Specific neurosteroids modulate function of several receptors, and also regulate growth of neurons, myelinization and synaptogenesis in the central nervous system. Some neurosteroids have been shown to display neuroprotective properties, which may have important implications for their potential use in the treatment of various neuropathologies such as: age-dependent dementia, stroke, epilepsy, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and Niemann-Picktype C disease (NP-C). This paper focuses on neuroprotection afforded by neurosteroids.

Background: Serotonin (5-HT) is released from enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract. 5-HT, via the activation of 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 receptors on vagal fibers, mediates pancreatic secretion through the mechani...

Tropane alkaloids as medicinally useful natural products and their synthetic derivatives as new drugs.

Secondary metabolites of Solanaceae plants, sharing tropane skeleton as a common structural feature, are sharply divided into two classes: tropine and ecgonine derivatives. The first group, represented by well known alka...

Buspirone improves 6-hydroxydopamine-induced catalepsy through stimulation of nigral 5-HT(1A) receptors in rats.

Receptors for 5-HT(1A) are widely distributed throughout the basal ganglia, and their activation results in an inhibition of dopamine (DA) release. This study aimed to investigate the effect of buspirone, as a partial ag...
