Enerji Güvenliği Bağlamında Doğu Akdeniz’deki Gelişmeler: Türkiye-Mısır İlişkileri
Journal Title: Turkish Journal of Policy Studies - Year 2022, Vol 2, Issue 1
Abstract
The gas reserves and estimated reserves discovered in the Eastern Mediterranean have changed the geopolitical balances in the region and affected the relations between the states. Some countries which have a coast on the Eastern Mediterranean have declared an Exclusive Economic Zone for their maritime areas, and triple alliances have emerged. Pipeline or LNG projects, which are discussed about how to transport gas reserves to new markets, are planned to ensure the energy security interests of the Israel-Cyprus-Greece or Greece-Egypt-Cyprus alliances established by excluding Turkey and the TRNC. Therefore, Turkey has taken a stance against these alliances by having to seek its own rights in the region. With the recent developments, the relations between the alliances and Turkey have begun to differ. As the two countries with the longest coastline, the relations of Egypt and Turkey among the actors in the region, seem to be very important in terms of energy projects in the Eastern Mediterranean and regional stability. The aim of this study is to examine how the discoveries and their results in the Eastern Mediterranean affected the relations between Egypt and Turkey. According to the results of the research, it is thought that the decisions of other actors in the region, leaving Turkey out, have a negative impact on Egypt-Turkey relations. However, considering the latest developments, it has been determined that the two countries, which returned to moderate policies, had close contacts. If these contacts result in an agreement on maritime areas, it is expected that both countries will gain an advantage.
