English Journalistic Discourse through the Prism of Modern Linguistic Research.

Abstract
The article is aimed at the analysis and elaboration of various approaches to the definition and interpretation of the notion of journalistic discourse. The notion of discourse is often investigated in comparison with the notion of a text. While a text is treated as a formal construction, a sequence of sentences without being bound to any communicative or sociocultural context, discourse is defined as a text in conjunction with extratextual factors or as a text along with its communicative or pragmatic context. Various approaches to defining a type of discourse are highlighted. Journalistic discourse is one of the most widespread types of discourse, since it acts as a mediator between different social and political institutions and the audience. It is considered to be one of the most powerful means of communicating ideas and influencing the society. The main functions of the journalistic discourse are specified. The characteristic features of this type of discourse are identified; they include succinctness, conciseness and simplified presentation of material. The lexical features of the journalistic discourse are determined. Newspaper and magazine texts often contain idioms, metaphors, nationally marked and informal vocabulary, vocabulary that carries specific connotation and figural expressions. Such vocabulary is used in journalistic texts in order to make them more emotional, evocative, related to readers and easy to understand. They help to emphasize the author’s attitude to the content, create the atmosphere of informal communication and also convey specific cultural information.
