Abstract

News is constantly attracting attention of many scholars, as it is one of the main factors contributing to the growing popularity of modern media. News, the production of which has previously been a complicated and costly process, today surrounds us everywhere: on computer displays, in mobile phones, on billboards, in public transport, on airplanes. News consumption is no longer limited to reading the morning newspaper or watching the evening newscast: it is served to us day and night, can be programmed for automatic ordering, delivery and sorting using personal digital devices, thus it determines the relevance of their in-depth study. The article is devoted to the study of modern English-language news discourse taking into account its pragmatic potential and the use of different linguistic means. It consideres the main definitions of "discourse" and "news". It is determined that on the one hand, discourse is a text immersed in life, with special grammar, vocabulary, rules of usage and syntax, and on the other hand – it is live communication, cognitive-speech and interactive phenomenon with all relevant components of communication. It is analyzed that news is not only a news post on the radio, television or in the press, where new information about the latest events is presented, but what is more efficient, it is a vital component in the existence of individuals, social life of groups, communities and states; it is a process, even a few processes, through which "raw information" becomes a new product. News discourse is viewed as one of the varieties of communicative discourse, that is why it is interactive, takes place in real time, reflects all changes in social life and is implemented in writing. It has a special significance in the media discourse, which performs an important social role - to express the interests of society and needs additional study. The main features of the English-language news discourse are characterized and analyzed. The article highlights its impact on the mass audience, which helps to create an illusion of objectivity in the network - to perceive news as a non-distorted reflection of reality; it also draws attention to the pluralization, efficiency and concentration of the material, laconism and simplification, which bring up news discourse to the mass audience, which ensures the market need to meet the needs of the consumer. The obtained results can serve as the basis for further study of the specificity of news texts functioning on the example of different languages, as well as the analysis of sociolinguistic, linguistic and cultural characteristics of media texts.
