Enhanced External Counterpulsaton(EECP): Shahid Gangalal Natonal Heart Center experience in frst nine patents
Journal Title: Nepalese Heart Journal - Year 2011, Vol 8, Issue 1
Abstract
Background EECP is a novel; FDA approved; non-invasive; outpatent treatment offered to patents with refractory angina pectoris (RAP).It uses sequentally inflated pneumatc cuffs on the lower extremites to enhance coronary diastolic flow. We studied its effect in eight patents with refractory angina pectoris. Methods All patents (n=9) who were referred for EECP to Shahid Gangalal Natonal Heart Centre who completed a treatment course (one hour per day for 35 days) of EECP and underwent 6-minute walk test before and afer treatment were included. Demographic data, coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factors and baseline angiographic data were collected. Distance covered in six minute walk test before and afer the treatment was compared. Results All the patents who had undergone EECP had a positve clinical response. Distance covered in Six minute walk test improved in all patents afer the treatment. Decrease in anginal severity, frequency and the use of sublingual nitrates, with improvement in quality of life was observed afer the treatment. During the treatment some patents complained of leg pain, one patent develops blister and one ecchymosis but the treatment was not discontnued. Conclusion The results from these patents suggest that EECP is an effectve, safe and well tolerated treatment opton for the patents with RAP.
