ENHANCING THE READING COMPREHENSION OF THE GRADE 7 LEARNERS OF DILI NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL THROUGH STORY MAP

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of story map in enhancing the reading comprehension of the grade 7 learners of Dili National High School, Dili, Santa Cruz. Specifically, this action research aimed to explore the following: a) What is the level of reading comprehension of the Grade7 learners of Dili National High School during the pretest and posttest? b) Is there a significant difference between the performance of Grade-7 learners of Dili National High School in the pretest and posttest? c) How effective is the usage of story map in improving the reading comprehension of the Grade-7 learners? It was conducted at Dili National High School. It involved 23 males and 22 females of the 7th Grade. The study was conducted from January 13 to February 3, 2023. The teacher-made test was used to determine the level of reading comprehension of the Grade 7 learners. The pretest was administered on the 13th day of January and the posttest was administered on the 3rd day of February. The mean was employed to compare the level of reading comprehension the respondents before and after the implementation of the researchers’ intervention and strategy. Results revealed that there is a significant difference between the pretest and the posttest scores of the learners. It revealed also that the posttest scores of the learners are higher than the pretest. This implies that the usage of story map is effective in improving the reading performance of the learners. The following were the recommendations: The teacher should use varied strategies to meet the needs of the learners and to make them more interested in reading and learning the English subject. The teacher should consider using story map to improve the reading comprehension of the learners. The teacher should have a continuous assessment on the learners’ performance by using other interventions aside from story mapping to uplift the reading comprehension performance of the learners
