Abstract

Oral Epidemiology has been advancing signi cantly in the last decades the knowledge about the distribution and determinants of oral diseases in the population. Its relevance, as a research area in Dentistry, is indisputable. Recent advances in epidemiological methods have allowed the construction of a robust knowledge, guided by scienti c rigor, but also guided by social commitment and tireless denunciation of avoidable and unjust differences that result in disease and suffering, especially in the most vulnerable portions of the population. In this sense that the present issue of Stomatos was dedicated to Oral Epidemiology. The special thematic issue addressed themes ranging from the distribution of the most prevalent oral diseases in the population to the evaluation of health technologies, highlighting the contribution of Brazilian production in the area to a better understanding of oral health problems, but also on the best strategies to face them. The articles in this issue evaluated the inequalities in the distribution of oral health teams in family health in Brazil, the prevalence of malocclusion and associated factors in the context of primary health care, factors associated with dental trauma, protocols for management of early childhood caries and the quality of dental care, with emphasis on costs and satisfaction in a military hospital. Together, these articles constitute an important contribution to the eld of Oral Epidemiology and a reading of interest for researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and health managers. For the latter, the results have potential for application in health decision-making processes, while for students they represent a rich material for study and re ection on relevant themes of Oral Epidemiology. Thus, the Editors of Stomatos wish everyone interested a great reading. Fernando Neves Hugo Director, Research Center for Social Dentistry Faculty of Dentistry of Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) EPIDEMIOLOGIA EM DESTAQUE A Epidemiologia Bucal vem, nas últimas décadas, avançando de maneira signi cativa os conhecimentos sobre a distribuição e os determinantes das doenças bucais na população. Sua relevância, como área de pesquisa em Odontologia, é indiscutível. Avanços recentes nos métodos epidemiológicos permitiram a construção de um conhecimento robusto, pautado pelo rigor cientí co, mas que também é orientado pelo compromisso social e pela denúncia incansável das diferenças evitáveis e injustas, que resultam em doença e sofrimento, especialmente nas parcelas mais vulneráveis da população. É nesse sentido que o presente número da Stomatos foi dedicado à Epidemiologia Bucal. O número temático especial abordou temas que vão da distribuição das doenças bucais mais prevalentes na população à avaliação de tecnologias em saúde, destacando a contribuição da produção brasileira na área para melhor compreensão dos agravos em saúde bucal, mas também sobre as melhores estratégias para enfrentá-los. Os artigos do número temático avaliaram as desigualdades na distribuição das equipes de saúde bucal na saúde da família no Brasil, a prevalência de má oclusão e fatores associados no contexto da atenção primária à saúde, os fatores associados aos traumatismos alveolodentários, os protocolos para manejo de cárie em crianças na primeira infância e a qualidade do cuidado odontológico, com ênfase em custos e satisfação, num hospital militar. Em conjunto, esses artigos constituem uma contribuição importante ao campo da Epidemiologia Bucal e uma leitura de interesse para pesquisadores, para estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação, e para gestores em saúde. Para os últimos, os resultados têm potencial de aplicação nos processos de tomada de decisão em saúde, enquanto para os estudantes representam um rico material para estudo e re exão em temas relevantes da Epidemiologia Bucal.
