EPIDEMIOLOGY OF CAESAREAN DELIVER
Journal Title: Българско списание за обществено здраве (Bulgarian Journal of Public Health) - Year 2018, Vol 0, Issue 3
Abstract
The frequency and consequences of caesarean delivery are presented in the light of the following WHO definition: “Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events.” Increasing rates of caesarean delivery in both Bulgaria and the United States are discussed in relation to the reasons for operative delivery. The latter have been grouped together in terms of their provenance: from patients, from medical professionals, and from prevailing attitudes within society. Special attention is given to the so-called ‘caesarean delivery on maternal request’. Risks of caesarean delivery are categorised as medical, medico-social, economic, and medico-legal. All of them may result in unfavourable consequences, namely: • individual patient’s suffering; • denial of the merits of medical care; • legal pursuit of health professionals and institutions; • negative impact on the assessment of health care systems; • increased costs of medical care. Approaches to reduce the unfavourable consequences of caesarean delivery to a socially acceptable minimum are proposed.
