Epilithic Diatom Composition and Some Physico-Chemical Parameters of the Streams in the Çoruh Basin (Turkey)

Abstract

Epilithic algae are very important for the nutritional chain for lotic ecosystems. It is also included in the group that should be examined in order to determine biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems. For this purpose, thisstudyhas been carried out in the Yağlı, Mülk, Sırakonaklar and Koçunboğazıstreams, which are located in the Coruh Basin. The streams’ altitude of (1730-2350 m), depth of(13.0 -45.6 cm), water temperature of (6.20 -8.10 °C), dissolved oxygen of (8.8-9.4 mg l−1), pH of (6.60-8.10), nitrite of (0.009 -0.020 mg l−1,) and nitrate values of (0.50 -2.26 mg l−1,)were determined. In the study, 17taxa belonging to the Bacillariophyta group were detected. Cymbella affinisKütz, Encyonema minutum(Hilse) D.G. Mann, Hannaea arcus(Ehrenberg) R.M.Patrickand Ulnaria ulna(Nitzsch) Compère species were found to be distributed throughoutall streams. In particular, it was determined that Hannaea arcus(Ehrenberg) R.M.Patrickspecieswas the highest quantitatively inthe Yagli stream. It wasdetermined that the streams haveanoligotrophiccharacterin terms of water quality and epilithic algal composition.Keywords:Environment, Epilithic, Stream, Diatom, Coruh BasinIntroduction:Water resources that form the basis of life are of great importancefrom ecological, economic and social aspects. In the case of the input of wastewaterin the river environment, a natural treatment process that takes its properties to the quality before it has beenpolluted starts in the aquatic environment. While progressing in the riverbed, concentration decreases as the drainage area increases,and many chemicals are removed by events such as adsorption, reaction and biological decomposition since they have reactive nature[13]. The creatures that are biological indicators, as well as physico-chemicalparameters, are used to determine the pollution load of a river system. In particular, epilithic algae takean important place in the nutritional chain sincethey contain indicator species in lotic aquatic systems. Microalgaeform a part of determining ecosystem, biodiversity and basin management. In our country, many studies have been carried out to determine the ecological and biological properties of epilithic algae [3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12] .This studywas carried out to determine the water quality and epilithic algalbiodiversity of the Yağlı, Mülk, Sırakonaklar and Koçunboğazı streamsthat are major trout streams of the Çoruh Basin. Because of the fact that this is the first study that has been carried out to determinethe epilithicdiatoms of the streams, it is thought to contribute to aquatic system biodiversity studies in Turkey.
