Eplerenone promotes alternative activation in human monocyte-derived macrophages.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2013, Vol 65, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: In this study, we have analyzed the response of human monocyte-derived macrophages to mineralocorticoid axis modulators. Methods: Human monocyte-derived macrophages were incubated with aldosterone alone, eplerenone alone, and the combination of aldosterone and eplerenone. The analyzed variables were nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species production, and the gene and protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase, arginase I, and mannose receptor. Results: We showed that aldosterone promotes a classic inflammatory response in macrophages, whereas its antagonist, eplerenone, attenuates aldosterone-induced activity. Conclusion: Eplerenone did not quantitatively weaken the response of macrophages to aldosterone but instead qualitatively changed their behavior.

Behavioral deficits and exaggerated feedback control over raphe-hippocampal serotonin neurotransmission in restrained rats.
Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), acting via the hippocampus, is thought to be critical for the neuroadaptation that alleviates the adverse effects of stress on emotion and behavior. It was hypothesized that a decre...
Investigations on gastroprotective effect of citalopram, an antidepressant drug against stress and pyloric ligation induced ulcers.
The present study investigates the gastroprotective effect of citalopram, an antidepressant drug. Gastroprotective activity of citalopram (5, 10 and 20 mg/kg, bid, po) was evaluated both by single and 14 days repeated pr...
Influence of vitamin C on markers of oxidative stress in the earliest period of ischemic stroke.
Experimental studies have demonstrated that oxidative stress plays an essential role in the pathophysiology of ischemic stroke. The objective of the present study was to assess some serum markers of oxidative stress in p...
Effects of agmatine on nicotine-evoked behavioral responses in rats.
Agmatine [2-(4-aminobutyl)guanidine], is a novel endogenous ligand at alpha(2)-adrenoceptors, imidazoline and N-methyl-D-asparate receptors, as well as a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor. The present study tested whether...
Bismuth increases hydroxyl radical-scavenging activity of histamine H(2)-receptor antagonists.
The effects of histamine H(2)-receptor antagonists, alone or in a combination with bismuth, on ( )OH-provoked degradation of deoxyribose were studied. The histamine H(2)-receptor antagonists (cimetidine, ranitidine and r...
