Error and misconception: Relation of fraction and part-whole<p>Hata ve kavram yanılgısı: Kesir ve parça bütün ilişkisi

Journal Title: Journal of Human Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 12, Issue 2

Abstract

In this study, students’ fraction concept has been studied to reveal their errors and misconceptions. For this purpose, researchers prepared an “error and misconception diagnostic test” which consists of 34 questions about part-whole relationship (simple and compound fractions), number line, and comment. The reliability coefficient of this test is 0.86. The misconceptions diagnostic test was applied to 73 secondary school students and 113 university students. According to results, students participated in the study had five different misconceptions type about fractions. They are: Unequal partitioning misconceptions; misconceptions about the expansion and simplification of fractions; misconceptions resulting from conceiving number line in part-whole relationship; misconceptions because of using unequal parts of a whole while adding; misconceptions about adding numerators and denominators of fractions.
