Estimation of possible Flooding Risks for Enhancement in Flood Resilience in River Valleys
Journal Title: Journal of River Engineering - Year 2013, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Flood is one of the major natural hazards which could cause great disaster. In order to enhance the flood resilience, the proper estimation of flood risks mainly possible loss of life is very much important. Catastrophic flooding could occur downstream of dams in case of dam failure and the possible damages i.e. loss of life & property damage could also be quite significant. The conventional flood resilient measures are not sustainable for long-term flood risk management in developed as well as in developing countries. This study emphasizes the enhancement in flood resilience based on realistic assessment of flooding risks specially in case of dam failure flooding. As case study, the Jhelum river valley downstream of Mangla dam (329 km long) in Pakistan has been considered. Based on official data, thorough investigation has been carried out for the evaluation of possible flooding risks in the Jhelum river valley downstream of Mangla dam. The results have also been generalized for other river valleys in the world. The results of this research would be useful for the enhancement in flood resilience through risk reduction measures in river valleys downstream of dams not only in Pakistan but also in other parts of the world.

Effects of Sediment on Water Quality in the Wetlands
Flowing water in a stream carries sediment which is considered a pollutant because it interferes with many uses of water. Other pollutants in the water may be attached to or greatly affected by the sediment. One of the...
Numerical Study of Flow Patterns around T shape spur dike And Support Structure
Spur dike is one of the economical ways to preserve river morphology. The numerical methods are so repeatable, and there can reduce time and the cost of simulation versus experimental methods. In the present study the...
Survey on agricultural wastewater quality level in Sugarcane agro-industrial units located in west and east of Karoon River by using WQI
The present research has been conducted to survey on agricultural wastewater quality from Amir Kabir and MirzaKoochak Khan units in the west, and Farabi, DeabelKhazaei and Salman in the east side of Karoon River. Mon...
Automatic Calibration for Estimation of the Parameters of Rainfall-Runoff Model
This paper describes the demonstration of an automated procedure for calibrating of AFFDEF model parameters. For this purpose, SCE algorithm which linked to the code of AFFDEF model, was used to calibrate spatial vari...
