ESTIMATION OF TRANS-BOUNDARY GROUNDWATER FLOWS AND CHEMICAL GROUNDWATER STATUS ASSESSMENT IN THE BORDER AREA WITH RUSSIAN FEDERATION (KALININGRAD OBLAST)

Abstract
The issue covering both the estimation of trans-boundary groundwater flows, as well as the chemical status assessment was carried out in several stages in the framework of the Polish Hydrogeological Survey activities. In the first phase the examinations regarded the Polish boundary area with neighbouring countries – European Union Member States (Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Lithuania). Next stage was focused on elaboration of groundwater flows in the borderland with Ukraine, Belarus and finally with Russia.The article presents the results of the estimated groundwater flows volume in the area of the Polish-Russian border zone. Assessed values were determined on the basis of the hydrogeological maps data and information of the hydrogeological boreholes. The results of the performed tasks allow to develop the effective groundwater monitoring network in the border area between Poland and Russia.
