Ethics in Nursing: Safe Medications Administration and Delegation in Colombia
Journal Title: RHS-Revista Humanismo y Sociedad - Year 2025, Vol 13, Issue 1
Abstract
Safe medication management is one of the fundamental goals of international patient safety and a critical component of the nursing practice. However, improper drug administration remains a persistent challenge for healthcare systems around the world. The aim of this article is to reflect on the ethical and legal aspects of safe medication administration and on delegating it to nursing staff. To this end, the study employs a literature review, and a case study analysis based on the researchers’ experience. The case study highlights the ethical dilemmas of delegating as well as the errors that occur in medication administration. The findings underscored the urgent need to incorporate educational programs on safe medication administration at all levels of nursing training. These programs should emphasize clinical decision-making, error identification, and prevention of adverse events. Furthermore, developing institutional policies that promote a safe environment for reporting errors is essential. Such policies should, thus, eliminate the fear of retaliation and encourage organizational learning from reported incidents.
