Etiopathogenesis, diagnostics and methods of non-invasive treatment of snoring in adults – review of literature

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2018, Vol 71, Issue 1

Abstract

Disorders affecting sleep can be the cause of various systemic diseases. The most common clinical problem with respiratory distress is obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS). OSAS has an adverse effect not only on the quality of sleep, which is related to the functioning during the day, but it also affects the general health. One of the main symptoms of OSAS is snoring, which results from vibrations of soft issues of the upper respiratory tract. Snoring can also occur on its own. The aim of the study was to present the methods of diagnosis of sleep disorders and their treatment. The primary diagnostic test for sleep disorders is polysomnography. In the cases of patients with snoring and OSAS, both non-invasive and invasive forms of treatment are used. The main non-invasive methods include behavioral therapy, constant positive airways pressure, orthodontic treatment, hypoglossal nerve stimulation and laser therapy. Behavioral treatment is also a method of preventing snoring. The primary method of treatment of OSAS, which is the main symptom of snoring, is the support of breathing through the constant positive airway pressure (CPAP). Among the latest non-invasive methods there is laser therapy, which is still rarely used in the treatment of patients with snoring.
