Evaluating the Effectiveness of Peptic Ulcer Disease Therapy in Adolescents from the Perspective of Quality of Life Criteria

Journal Title: Здоров`я дитини - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 73

Abstract

The article presents the results of the study on the quality of life in children aged 14–17 years, suffering from a stomach ulcer and/or duodenal ulcers. Introduction. When assessing the effectiveness of different treatments, it has been proved that clinical parameters are not enough for the complete verification of response to therapy. The quality of life indexes should be included to the list of criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of treatment. Objective: to assess the effectiveness of drug treatment for peptic ulcer disease in adolescents aged 14 to 17 years with the help of international questionnaire PedsQL™ 4.0 and to determine the feasibility of its use in pediatric practice. Materials and methods. The study involved 50 children with the diagnosis «stomach ulcer and/or duodenal ulcer, acute stage» aged 14–17 years. Evaluation of the quality of life of patients was carried out on admission to hospital and 1 month after treatment wit the help of PedsQL™ 4.0 questionnaire using separate forms for children and parent. Results. When comparing the quality of life at baseline and after a month, we can conclude that the parameters of physical, emotional, psychosocial and school functioning became significantly higher during the survey of both children and their parents. When filling out the questionnaire by children, their quality of life indices were significantly higher than when filling the questionnaire by their parents, on the scales of physical functioning, school life, psychosocial functioning and the mean value of all scales. This difference was found before and during the treatment, and one month after received therapy. Conclusion. The significant increase in most indicators on the PedsQL™ 4.0 questionnaire 1 month after received treatment, according to approved protocols, demonstrates the possibility of using this tool for assessing the quality of life as an additional criterion for efficacy of drug therapy of peptic ulcer in adolescents.
