Journal Title: ESTÜDAM Halk Sağlığı Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction: Adolescent pregnancies are a major social problem which also affects health, especially in low to middle income countries. In this study, the situation of the Independent Turkic States in terms of adolescent pregnancies will be evaluated. In addition, the relationship between education's and socio-economic level's some parameters with Independent Turkic States' data relating to pregnancy in adolescence will be tried to be revealed. Method: Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan were discussed on behalf of Independent Turkic States. For this study, sociodemographic parameters were found to be related to adolescent pregnancies were determined and country data was obtained. Possible parameters affecting the adolescent pregnancy status were examined. The countries were compared in terms of adolescent pregnancies and births. Spearman correlation analysis was used for statistical analysis of possible relationships. The country resemblance was assessed using Clustering Analysis using the variables for 2016. The Single Connection Method with Quadratic Euclidean Distance was used in the Clustering Analysis. Similarities were shown by Dendrogram. For statistical significance, p <0.05 was accepted. Results: "Percentage of women who have children or who are still pregnant in 15 to 19 years of age" is around 6-7% for all countries since 1990's. It is seen that this percentage does not exceed 10% in the Turkish states. Turkmenistan's percentage is 4.3% for the year 2000, which is considerably lower than that of other countries. However, when the rate of adolescent fertility is evaluated in 15-19 year old women, From the 1960s to 2015 we see a decline in all countries, except Azerbaijan. The fertility rate of Azerbaijan, which was 0,43% in 1960, rose to 0,61% in 2015. Turkmenistan is the country with the lowest fertility rate of 15-19 years with 1,6%. There was no correlation between adolescent pregnancies and education level and socioeconomic level (p> 0.05). In terms of variables related to adolescent fertility rate; The similarity rate of all countries is 50%. The country with the lowest similarity is Turkmenistan, whose adolescent fertility rate is lower than the others. Conclusion: At the end of this study, evidence was obtained that Turkmenistan had less frequent adolescent pregnancies and births among the Independent Turkic States. In this study, no relation could be shown between the sociodemographic parameters studied and the adolescent mother.
