Evaluation of antioxidant activity of methanolic extract, fractions and pure compounds of Syzygium aromaticum

Journal Title: World Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 10

Abstract

Antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of the Syzygium aromaticum, its fractions and pure compounds oleanolic acid (1), nigricin (2), 3, 4, 3′-tri-O-methylellagic acid (3), 2α-hydroxyoleanolic acid (4) and β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5) was determined by using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. The results showed that main aqueous (SA-MAQ), petroleum ether soluble (SA-PES), ethyl acetate soluble (SA-EAS), acetone soluble (SA-AS) and methanol soluble (SA-MS) fractions possess potent DPPH radical scavenging activity (EC50= 93.75 μg/ml). Compound (4) also showed potent activity with EC50 =93.75 μg/ml). This is the first report of systematic antioxidant activity of methanolic extract, its fractions and pure compounds isolated from S. aromaticum flower buds.
