EVALUATION OF CANCER PATIENTS ADMITTED TO AFYON KOCATEPE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL FACULTY MEDICAL ONCOLOGY CLINIC

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Cancer-related deaths are the most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. Cancer is a serious problem if it causes morbidity and mortality. Although there are many studies investigating cancer epidemiology in the world and our country, there is still insufficient data in some regions. This study was conducted to determine the demographic variability of cancer patients admitted to an oncology outpatient clinic in the Afyonkarahisar region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This descriptive and retrospective study included 2201 cancer patients admitted to the Medical Oncology Outpatient Clinic of Afyon Kocatepe University Hospital between April 2012 and June 2015. RESULTS:1101 (50%) of the patients were male, 1100 (50%) were female, and the mean age was 60. The rate of smoking in all patients was 1312 (59.6%), while the rate of non-smokers was 889 (40.6%). The five most common types of cancer seen in all patients included in the study were as follows; lung cancer 469 (21.3%), breast cancer 447 (20.3%), colorectal cancer 373 (16.9%), stomach cancer 193 (8.8%), ovarian cancer 70 (3.2%). The 5 most common types of cancer in women; breast 443 (40.3%), colorectal 153 (13.9%), lung 81 (7.4%), stomach 75 (6.8%), over 70 (6.4%). The 5 most common types of cancer seen in men are; lung 388 (35.2%), colorectal 220 (20%), stomach 118 (10.7%), prostate 58 (5.3%), the pancreas were 35 (3.2%). CONCLUSIONS: In our study, the rates of cancer types, metastasis rates and other characteristics were similar to those of our country and the world in patients admitted to the Oncology outpatient clinic of Afyon Kocatepe University Department of Internal Medicine.
