Evaluation of dentition and health awareness in 12-year-old children from the region of Skierniewice

Abstract
Aim of the study: To assess the dental health of 12-year-old-children residing in the region of Skierniewice (Trzcianna and Nowy Dwór). Also to determine the knowledge of the pupils concerning caries prophylaxis and oral health prevention.Material and methods: 111 children aged 12 years and living in the region of Skierniewice (Trzcianna, Nowy Dwór) participated in the study. The clinical examination focused on the ntensity of caries (DMF) and its prevalence. To elicit information concerning dietary habits and oral hygiene practices a questionnaire was prepared.Results: The incidence of caries among 12-year-old children living in rural areas was 89.2%. The percentage of caries-free subjects was 10.8%. The DMF index was 3.57 (Nowy Dwór), and 4.23 (Trzcianna). Children revealed good knowledge of oral hygiene principles, but it was not reflected in their oral health as manifested.Conclusion: The obtained results indicate that the state of dentition in 12-year-old children from rural areas is poor. However, their awareness of oral health prevention was satisfactory.
