Evaluation of health promoting behaviours concerning breast cancer among women living in the Lublin Macroregion

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction: In our age, due to increasing social awareness, a higher level of knowledge, and progress in medicine, breast cancer is detected earlier, diagnosed, and treated. However, despite various prophylactic actions, to this day nearly a half of the women diagnosed with breast cancer die. Objective: Evaluation of health promoting behaviours concerning breast cancer among women in selected occupational groups. Material and method: The research material were three groups of women. The first group were teachers employed at School Complex No.4. The second group were nurses from the Children’s Clinical Hospital in Lublin, and the third group – employees of the District Dairy Cooperative in Piaski. The study was conducted by the method of a diagnostic survey using the questionnaire technique. The results showed considerable differences in pro health behaviours related with the selfexamination of the breast, methods and interpretation of the changes observed, as well as discrepancies in the level of knowledge concerning adequate prophylaxis. Conclusions: 1. Every fourth woman does not know on which day of the menstrual cycle selfexamination of the breast should be performed (25%); 53% of respondents posses proper knowledge concerning the time of performing this examination, i.e. between days 6–9. 2. As many as 89% of women knows the methods of performing selfexamination of the breast, only 32% of them perform the examination with correct frequency, i.e. once a month. 3. Selfexamination of the breast is usually performed in a standing position in front of a mirror, which allows visual evaluation of the breast. 4. Despite being familiar with the methods of selfexamination of the breast by 89% of the women in the study, every fifth woman did not examine her breast.Key words: prophylaxis, breast cancer, health promoting behaviours
