Evaluation of outcomes of treatment of follicular cysts in children using a modified method of decompression

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2015, Vol 11, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction. Cysts are pathological cavities lined withstratified squamous epithelium and usually filled withfluid containing cholesterol crystals. Follicular (ordentigerous) cysts or less frequently, eruptive, traumaticor radicular ones are those most commonly diagnosed inpediatric dental patients. Cysts are usually discoveredaccidentally on panoramic radiographs performed, interalia, to plan orthodontic treatment. For that reason, anorthodontist is often the first specialist that can recognizea cystic lesion and refer the patient for surgical treatment. One of the more plausible theories regarding follicularcyst etiology during the mixed dentition stage is associatedwith an inflammatory mediator that causes pulp necrosisin deciduous teeth. Surgery is the only treatment andconsists in enucleation, marsupialization or decompression.Aim. Evaluation of treatment outcomes of the follicularcysts in patients with mixed dentition. Material andmethods. Results of gnathic bone cyst treatment in fivemale patients aged 8 to 10 years were evaluated. Thehealing outcome evaluation included such criteria asabatement of the swelling of the maxillary alveolar process/alveolar segment of the mandible, radiography-confirmedbone healing , preserved vitality of adjacent teeth, anderuption of the teeth that were originally situated in thecyst lumen. Results. Subsequent bone healing processwas confirmed by panoramic radiographs performed 18months after the surgical procedures.
